Dixie Mechanical | Summer Safety Reminders

As a Southern fabricator and mechanical contractor, we know how brutal the summer heat gets. By July and August, the heat index often tops a hundred degrees, and our PPE makes it feel even hotter. Add flame-resistant clothing, welding hoods, gloves, and steel-toe boots, and the body works just as hard to stay cool as it does to build quality piping.

Getting the job done right matters, but no deadline is worth risking your health.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Hydrate early and often. Drink water the night before, before your shift, and every fifteen to twenty minutes on the job. Thirst means you’re already behind.
  • Welders, take extra care. The arc adds serious radiant heat. Remove your hood and gloves when safe, take cooling breaks, stay ventilated, and watch your buddies.
  • Plan your day. Save the toughest lifts and hard physical work for the cooler morning hours. Pace yourself in the afternoon heat.
  • Look out for each other. If a coworker seems off—tired, confused, or just not themselves- speak up. Heat stress can sneak up on anyone.
  • Rest isn’t weakness. A short break in the shade with water can save your whole day.

Drink water before you’re thirsty, take your breaks, eat well, wear your PPE right, and never ignore the signs of heat illness. The job will be there tomorrow—make sure you are too.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and stay proud of your craft.
